Our festival is named after the town of Jim Thorpe, where it is held. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was renamed in 1954 to honor the famous Native American athlete, Jim Thorpe. Born in 1887, Jim was a standout in football, baseball, and track, and he won two Olympic gold medals in 1912. We acknowledge Jim Thorpe as our namesake with a special block of Native American films each year, and our festival welcomes a diverse array of genres from filmmakers around the world.
